Fly fishing is in a fishing class of it's own. One must throw every thing they know about fishing out the door and start school all over. It has it's own equiptment and understanding about catching fish on basic equiptment. It is another sport of it's own...

I tried it for a couple of years for pan fish ..Had a split bamboo 9 foot rod...Didn't have a teacher just sorta picked it on my own..Just wasn't very good at picking out the right tippit to use or changing from floating to sinking....I did learn how to catch trout at Hammertown Lake though. Catching a 3lb rainbow on that rod was as enjoyable as catching a 40 lb cat on a cat rod.

I love to Fly fish although my fly rod got destroyed on the way home from Michigan a few years ago and I never replaced it. My son's fly rod is out in the garage if I get in a bind. It's awesome for big Bluegill, smallmouth bass, and even largemouth on a good day. I've also used my fly gear to fish carp just for the thrill of it. I wouldn't call it fly fishing when it comes to carp, but if you want to learn how to handle big fish on light line just hook up with a 9 pound carp on a 12 foot fly rod with a 4 pound tippet.
I've never been a trout fisherman although I did catch a 24" brown on my Fly rod in Michigan once. Mostly it for the bluegill, and a 9 inch bluegill is a lot of fun.

You must not wade in deep water.

I got into making flies a couple years back and would make trips to the close water soarce right down the road from me. I caught quite a few bass and panfish. The biggest bass i caught was prolly 3lb but it was like catching a 10lb. I have also caught carp on mine but i cheated and was tipping the hook with corn haha
