I think some people call them bull heads. They have beady little eyes and are green colored cats. They do have large heads compared to their bodies.

whoo hoo. People don't know what we mean when we say polly or polliwog. I just looked at bobber mans link that has pics. I looked up the bullhead. Another name for it is polliwog. I guess that is a southern term or something. But I looked at shovelheads too. I don't think we have them here.

The main lake we fish doesn't list it as being in the lake. Havent' checked the other lakes around here. I know we have only caught channels, blues, and of course pollies in the lake we usually fish. There are other fish too, but we mainly catfish

Kirby and Canyon Rock are actually city reservoirs and the fish there were probably stocked with channels and blues only. The shovelhead is more aggressive and most cities do not stock with them because of that reason. Most any good size river there will have them. you may want to try Lake Abilene for them.I lived in Wylie years and years ago and there was a river south of there that my Dad would take us kids to . Cannot remember the name of it. Talk to the Parks and Wildlife the can tell you the closest place to catch them . I lived in Denton for awhile and there is a large lake there that has them..Dad worked in the oilfeild and we moved around a bunch untill Mom said no more. Still have some family in Denton...

Ahhhh the good ole bullhead ;D Never heard them called Pollies before. They are a fun fish to catch on light tackle beings they don't get real big. They are stubborn little buggers and will clamp down tight on your finger if you lip fish like I do. Never underestimate them either. We were catching them on lines we set in a pond. The lines were meant for snapping turtles, but we would always catch large sized bullheads on them. One time when all that was left on a bullhead was the head, my dad stuck his thumb in it's open mouth trying to dislodge the hook. Well, I heard a loud "Ouch, you sonuva b...." Only to turn around and see him with this bullheads head clamped on his thumb. We actually had to take a knife slide it in beside my dads thumb then turn it to open the mouth

Here, we sumtimes call tadpoles, polliwogs. The larva stage of bullfrogs. Bullheads are just that, Bullheads. I think we got more than one kinda bullhead tho. And yeah, some folks eat em. Mostly kids and old folks. Easy to catch and if ya get em started in yer pond, its hard ta get rid of em. They'll take over.
I reemmber as a kid, that there was this old feller from town that would fish this lil hole of water bouta half mile from here where a creek ran under the road. Every week he would come there just to catch a mess of fish.
I usedta hate to catch bullheads cuz they would nearly always swaller the hook. I never tried catchin em with circle hooks. Mite be more fun nowadays.

Don't know Canyon Rock. We have fished laked Abilene, but didn't do anygood. It also almost dried up a few years back. I think the river you are refering to is the Colorado River. We went there last summer. Spent the night. We caught a couple. I think they do have shovelheads. The guy that recommended it to us talked of cathching huge yellow cats.
