I had an uncle who used to catch turtles by hand but he wasn't quite this crazy. I would actually like to do this, I think it is likely less dangerous than it looks, but then I might be wrong. I do know I want to catch some turtles this year, I haven't had turtle for about 5 years, and absolutely love it. www.wimp.com/snappingturtles/

I'll let you know when I catch some, you and Dennis can come right up.
Setthehook says when I learn to catch turtles like that he wants to watch, I think he ought to learn also.

We could call him Tommy Three toes or stubby after he gets good at it.

Years ago, we found this huge turtle on the side of the road. He had spikes on his tail and shell. We wanted to check him out. That was the meanest turtle we ever saw. He was hissing at us and trying to attack us. We got a big ole' thick stick, and he bit it in half. He looked kinda prehistoric looking. We decided to just leave him be.

my brother caught a big snapper and it was pissed. We almost got a friend to pick it up but he didn't. It smashed my brothers tackle box with its head.

That is a freaky story. Who'd think a turtle could be so mean? But I have seen it, and yes they are.

If it was Spikey it was probably an alligator Snapper which happens to be one of the only things meaner and more ill tempered than a common snapping turtle. I've caught one or two in my life, but the Alligator snappers are really rare, so I always let them go even before they were protected. When you find a snapper on the road or any real distance from the water it's usually either migrating due to losing a territory dispute, or its a female going to or from it's egg laying site, either situation usually makes them meaner than normal. Setthehook, all you have to do is pick them up by the tail and put them in the truck. I'll show you this summer, they can be handled safely. Dave
