My personal preferences lean way more towards the traditional side for Firearms, most of my hunting is done with Black powder, and I don't even use in-lines, for home defense a short barrelled Model 12 winchester 12 gauge, and or a stoeger coach gun are available, for CCW I had a .45 ACP until the truck theft a couple of weeks ago, and will replace it, currently carrying something else quite adequate that a friend loaned me. I really like the military style rifles from a clinical and paractical standpoint, but don't own any myself simply because they aren't my sort of gun. I have a friend who has an AR, an AK, and a .50 BMG, I shoot all three and really get a kick out of them (No pun intended).
When the 12 guage isn't practical I am a firm believer that nothing smaller than a .357 mag should be used, I've seen and read to many studies on stopping power to trust smaller calibers in the Dark against an unknown assailant. even with a Kevlar Vest, my .45 is fairly effective. I['m also a Firm believer in the to each their own Philosophy on Firearms, just because something isn't my preference doesn't make it wrong or bad.
