This may be a stupid question. But when the fish are jumping can you tell what kind of fish it is? Do different fish jump different. When they jump really high, I just assume it is bass. But is it? Whenever they shoot straight up in the air and clear the water or dance on the water? When they jump along the surface of the water? Do bass jump different than cats. I would think that a cat wouldn't jump as high as it has a heavy, bulky body. One jumped right in front of me today. I would have sworn it was a cat (you have to look so fast) It was one of those that went straight up out of the water. So , do different species (mainly bass, cats and maybe carp) jump different? Or is a fish jumping, just a fish jumping.

They all jump about the same..Mostly they jump because they are below the food and have the speed and can not turn before getting to the surface..Sometimes they are startled by a larger fish and are trying to get out of the way. Just my guess.

I never reallly thought about "why" they jump. That is interesting. I know I have watched bass and carp hitting the surface catching bugs that are on top. Do cats normally jump, or are they too bulky.
Dennis reminded me of the old Doobie brothers song: Black Water. where the sing about the catfish a jumpin

Cats are funny in why they jump. They arte a bottom dweller where the oxygen levels are low, and they will occasionally shoot to the top to take a gulp of Air (Yes that's what I said) they cannot process air without lungs, but will gulp a mouthfull and let it oxygenate the water in their mouths and push it out through their gills. My cats in my aquariums do this regularly and it's a trip to watch them. Bass are typically not in the lower O2 areas, so if they jump it's most likely one of the things that MC mentioned. Cats typically jump more than any other species, and yes you have to be quick to see what type of fish, but my observation is that it's usually a cat or carp.

Good info on the cats jumping Dave, always wondered about it as I have seen them jump from time to time.
