For a couple years, I had a nice garden and loved it. Our tiller went out. We got it used, so it was just worn out. I am really missing gardening. Especially with the price of vegetables now. I got to thinking, I don't need a "garden plot". I can put beans next to the fence anywhere and let them climb it. Onions, okra, squash, etc can just be put in flower beds or something. I do have a pressure cooker, and Dennis and I LOVE to can together. We just always have enjoyed canning. We make jelly together too. We have more fun kidding around, and we both take great pride in saying that we canned that.

Sounds like a good plan to me... Do you can pear apple jelly? Been years since I tasted any on toast.

No. But we have made several different kinds to enter them in the county fair (years ago). We have made Dr. Pepper jelly. And about every other year, we make prickly pear jelly and mesquite bean jelly.

Oh, to have a fella that enjoyed gardening and canning with me would be a dream come true! I would settle for one that enjoyed just the gardening part, even, but enjoying some canning would be a terrific bonus! Course, I have to add in that he needs to at least tolerate farm critters, too, lol. I have a pressure cooker that has set in the box for years. I am planning (big) on getting to use it this year. Oh how I would love to grow and can a whole year's worth of veggies like we did when I was a kid (and dehydrate/freeze, etc).
I don't have a tiller, either. Haven't had for years. Traded my broken one off for hay for the goats. Just me and my shovel (and crutch, lol, it makes good shallow rows.) Although I enjoy all my shade, I have far too much for a full, all-in-one-place garden, (and no tiller) so I am planting in every corner, flower bed and large pot this year where I can find sunshine, in determination to have a garden. I do have one section that is about 20x30 where I am planting my "root crops." It was a dog pen when we moved here, then it was a hog pen, then goats/chickens, and I think some rabbits have been in it. After I took down the fence to move the goats I decided to prepare it for a garden. It has been decomposing for the past 4 years, and I have added in leaves, plant material, and wood ashes during all that time, stirring it up now and then. It is now about 5 to 6 inches raised (putting rocks around it) and loose as potting soil. And does it ever look rich!! Spent today burning the last dead tree trunk off of it so I can plant my asparagus there.
You can put beans and cucumbers next to the fence. And, if you have some old scrap fencing, you can use that. Take a long piece, fold it around into a circle (like a big tomato cage), stand it up in your "garden," stake it down with some tent stakes, and plant your beans/cucumbers inside. I plan to do that with some of those Yard Long beans. Never have heard of Dr. Pepper jelly, but it sounds interesting (if you like Dr. Pepper). I do love Pepper Jelly.... poured over a block of cream cheese, served with some crackers. mmmmmm......

You do inspire me tentfire. I am definitly gonna do a garden this year. Just like that, whereever I find a spot. I have plenty shovels. And I have a couple pitch forks that will work too. And yes, it is great to have Dennis around. We do just about everything together. I love to kid around about him being in the doghouse. But I don't think he ever has been. We just love to rib each other. He is a school teacher, and when he is off for spring break, summer, etc, he does my laundry and things for me.
