We have been catching a bunch of channels lately that have really big heads, but small bodies. They look really strange as they are really out of proportion. They all also seem to have a gray tint to them. We talked to some other people that said they caught some of them too and was also wondering what was up with that. Any clue on what causes that?

Someone told me once that them were males and the more stream lined channels were females. Then later on an old catfishin friend told me that them was what they had always refered to as "Chuckleheads". Whatever that means. I also noticed they had somewhat mottled meat. Didn't look like normal channels. So I dont really have a good answer for ya. Sowwy!

Sure that they were not shovelhead instead of channel...Only way to really tell is to count the dorsal fin rays. Channel cats will have 24 to 29 soft rays while a shovelhead will have 32 to 36 soft rays.. Also the lower lip on shovelheads protrude out futher than the top lip. Channel cats are even...

I've heard of chucklheads!!!!!!!!!!! Never knew what it meant. Hmmmm. I'm pretty sure they aren't shovels. Kirby doesn't have shovelheads according to Parks and wildlife. We never have caught a shovelhead there. Next time, I will take pictures.

Just because they were not stocked by the State doesn't mean that someone didn't turn some loose in there on purpose or by accident...

True. I have thought about that. Like I say, these are very gray colored. I 'll get a pic.
