Will a woodpecker kill a tree? I have one hanging out on my fruitless mulberry just pounding away. Someone told me that all trees have dead wood, and they only peck on the dead wood. Should I chase him away, or leave him there? If so, what's a good way to get rid of it?

They peck for one of 2 reasons. To make a nesting home or to eat the insects which are under the bark...Can hang foil plates on strings for the wind to move around or shoot them. being a mulberry tree it is for the food. Tree sap or insects. Mulberry tree sap is sweet and the fruit is also part of their diet....

I have never haerd or observed that they will kill a tree. they probably do less damage than the bugs they eat. Dave

That's good to know Dave. He is really pretty. I was hoping he wouldn't do much damage. I like watching him.

You can buy the "suet" block to hang in the tree to feed him. He will stay around to eat . that type of bird food will attract other birds such as cardnals, bluejays. Sparrows and such birds will not eat at it. Not their type of food..
