You know, it seems I have been on a 15-year bad roll, and it just keeps getting worse. To be honest, I am on the edge of total doom from so many directions I am about ready to give up and become a hermit. I have absolutely no clue as to which way to go right now. As for my house flooding, it has flooded in bits from time to time, due to a drainage problem, but usually just a little on the floor in a couple of rooms, and drained right back out in a couple of hours. And with the right equipment and supplies, the problem is totally fixable. I had built a burm behind the house (most of one - Jonathan had helped, too, even with his leg hurting with cancer- God love him!) and it had done a great job so far, keeping water back. House had stayed dry. Was going to put more levels up this spring. Guttering helped too (needs to be cleaned out again, though). But this time was different. There was so much mud and debris washed down from above my property that it blew the rock burm over and came right for the house (and through it and in it). I had anywhere from 2 inches to 2 feet throughout the house. So much of my craft and book room is gone!! No telling what else. Even my soap molds are under water. I went out today to try and assess everything and see if I could figure out what the heck happened. Well, for starters, that new fence my mom and I put up for the goats last spring had obviously acted as a dam and when all the debris from further back behind me hit it, it blocked up the creek, which in turn, backed up into my house. I had it figured that the burm would catch debris and the 6 x 6 holes in the fence would let the water through. I was trying like everything to figure out where all that debris and mud came from! After puzzling for a long time I remembered the walk Jonathan and I went on last fall to the back of my property. After breaking my let, it had been awhile since I had been able to go back there and check my fences and all. Well, the neighbors had been doing a BUNCH of bull dozing on the property just behind me and had piles of loose dirt, stacks of limbs and rubbish, AND had bull dozed my back fence down and cut down one of my best (live) Oak trees!! There were red survey flags up, but they went beyond those and tore up my property, even piled a bunch of their debris onto the back of my property to clear theirs. That had to be all the stuff that had come rushing down and stopped up my creek. In town you have to put up a temporary barrier to do that kind of work. With everything that has been going on here since, I haven't been able to take another walk back there again with my camera so I could get picks to use to see what I can do about it all. An officer told me that since it was under $5000 I would have to get a lawyer and take it to small claims court. I couldn't file charges. GEEZ!!! These neighbors keep doing this crap to me over, and over, and over. Always too small to file charges, but big enough to really do me damage. Over time they have stolen my cat, my goose (they still have it), my firewood, and no telling what else, purposely run over some of my geese (another neighbor caught them and put a stop to that one), dog mysteriously died. I caught them spot lighting deer at my hay bale one night (2am). They gave me he&! with my goats and cost me hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get that all settled. They even went so far as to bust my fence down, sit there and watch for the goats to come through, then called the sheriff on them. (Oh, well, that is another story). A deputy asked me once just how many of that family live on this little mountain! I said I didn't know for sure, but a LOT of them. I am guessing, that since they are all around me, that they are trying to push me out of my home so they can spread on over into my space. Oh, and it didn't help that I dated someone once that turned out the be one of their relatives and they are VERY revengeful people. * head thunk*. I love it here, most of my other neighbors are great, and I don't want to move. I have put so much into it already, and I have so many plans for this place and it has super potential. But I am worn down, tired of fighting them, and going to have to start all over again. Oh, yes, it probably doesn't help that they have just built a new armory a few miles from me, and it is in the plans to pave my road all the way to the river (one mile from me, where boats launch), put a bridge over the river, and make a straightway between the new armory and the one on the other side of the river. When they eventually get it done, it is going to shoot the property values WAY up. Having mine added to theirs, would really raise theirs. I really think I am trying to be shoved out, literally, mud, debris and all. I will try to post pics in a day or two. Thanks guys!!!

I know how you are feeling about the neighbors and such...It is always so hard to pick up and just start over with such things going on all the time....Stick by your guns and wait till the road plans go through...The property value will increase then and give you more bargaining power...Because of the possibility of the new road it could very well introduce you to a company wanting to buy and relocate to that area....Just a thought to ponder upon..

Thanks! And I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking on the lines of putting in a General Store (no store within 5-7 miles), but that is a good thought, too. Sometimes I just don't think I can keep up with everything they keep throwing at me. This time, along with nature's fury, it may be too much. We will see. Today I stopped at my mom's house (she is still in the health center) and popped a tiny turkey in her over to cook while I ran errands. Went and helped a close friend for a little bit... a friend that was just diagnosed with cancer about 2 weeks ago and is now home with hospice. It did me good today, in the midst of everything, to be able to go help someone else be a little more comfortable. Went back and took the turkey out (Oh, how good it smelled! And so juicy and tender.) Pulled a little off to take home and put the rest in her fridge (still can't get to mine, but getting closer). Oh, what a great comfort food that roasted Butterball is! Then came home and found out my front (main) security light is out. Boy, is it ever dark here tonight. If this thing quits knocking me off of here, I am going to finish my reports, get some sleep, and once again, start life all over tomorrow, whatever that might bring.

With all the rain here, the springs are every where . Can see the water running from out of the hill side. Wouldn't think that sand and gravel could hold so much ..

I hear ya. It's doing the same thing here..... looks like the ground is boiling sometimes.
Had a little more flooding with this last round and a few rooms are standing in two inches of water. Can't seem to dig fast enough. Going to have to hope no more severe stuff comes before I can put up some type of barrier. Obviously the berm isn't going to work. And life itself is so stormy right now, it is robbing me of time to work on it. As I type this, I am balancing a sick baby goat on my lap, and the dogs outside are barking wildly at something (it's 3am). And in less than 12 hours yet another friend will be laid to rest, after losing a 2-week fight with cancer. It was a horrible thing to watch. I never saw cancer move so fast in anyone! I still say I am going to run away and become a hermit. My mom is improving, though, and came home today. I hosed mud out of stuff today before I could put it in the washer. Some stuff I am just tossing, but some I am trying to save. And I haven't even gotten to start pulling out carpet yet. That stuff is really heavy when wet! I did get excited about a patch of wild garlic I found in the midst of everything this week. It is top quality.
I was just now able to finally lay the baby goat down for a little bit. He is holding his head up a little now. And Bunny, the 5-month old Boxer puppy is watching over him like a little mother hen, and washes the kids face every time he eats. Gonna be a loooooonnnng night.

This was once a neatly dug-out creek bed, a couple of feet from the house. And it flowed into an old French-type drain, which is cracked up and gone, now. It use to be really pretty to look at when it flowed properly and sounded really neat just outside the window. The land has really shifted. There is still a good French drain on the other side of the house (no creek there.) Attachments:

This is what I am trying to dig out. It has backed everything up behind the house, where it in turn runs in the back door. I think I screwed up putting that fence there. Would probably still be okay if I had a barrier before it. Attachments:

I somehow have to get this cut up, too. I am cutting it a little at a time and tossing it in the goat yard. But the main branch is just too big for me to cut. It isn't completely split from the tree, so hoping it stays green (soft) for awhile. Maybe I can get creative and make a bench out of the long, thick branch after I get all the smaller branches off, lol. You probably can't see it here. Attachments:

Where everything came crashing into the back of the house when my berm blew apart. It use to be a deep trench dug out back here, that underground springs feed into. Attachments:

You can see the incline going up from the back of the house. The incline keeps going up for about 4 acres back, though not quite so sharp the whole way up. Attachments:
