Yep, I have a sunburn. It got me good this weekend. That man-made shade didn't fend off those rays.
When you are out in the sun and you first notice that you are burning, one of the first things you usually do is ...... get out of the sun. But your sunburn doesn't stop there. Your skin has absorbed heat and rays and will continue to burn for hours more (after you are out of the sun) until you neutralize it and remove the heat.
Applying cold water will help a little to reduce the heat, but it is still going to hold heat and still going to continue to burn. The very best thing you can apply, immediately after you get out of the sun, is VINEGAR. Apple Cider Vinegar is the very best, but any will help. Either just splash it on or put it in a spray bottle and mist it on. I practically poured it on last night, then splashed it on again this morning. Last night it was instant soothing... awwwww.. This morning it burned a little, then felt much better. It somehow pulls the heat out of the burn much better than just water, and neutralizes anything else that is causing your skin to continue to burn. Then, the Apple Cider Vinegar is also LOADED with healing properties for the skin. Course, after it dries, I also dab on my skin cream because it further relieves the pain and greatly reduces the blistering and peeling. You will want to also use something to keep our skin from tightening and crinkling, but applying vinegar initially is the most important step to reducing the severity of a sunburn.
So, next time you head out to the water for the day, besides all of your fishing gear, munchies and sunscreen, don't forget to pack a bottle of vinegar, too.
