As I've posted elsewhere, I'm currently 57, and live on Belton Lake in Central Texas. I'm a life member of the NAFC, and began fishing with my Grandparents and family a long time ago. Currently most of my fishing is either using an ultra lite rig, or a fly fishing rig, going after bluegills and crappie.
A confession I have to make, is that I don't really know how to go out and specifically look for, find and catch cats. While they are my preferred species of fish, most of the cats I've caught were either caught on a trot-line, or while I was trying to catch something else.
When I spoke to Frank (bobberguy), while ordering a set of B.W.A.B's, He told me about this forum and sent me the Addie by e-mail. I looked at it, and so far, this is the forum I've been looking for, to learn HOW TO CATFISH !!
There's a lot of info on this forum, and I'm still knee deep in trying to figure out what I need to learn, , and where to look for it.
I'm sure most of the questions I need answers to exist somewhere on this forum, so If you can point me to the proper thread, I'd appreciate it.
I saw in one thread about hooks, that most seem to prefer using a circle hook. I've never tried em, but like the idea. A couple of y'all said once you got used to em, they were better. What was it you needed to get used to ?? Baiting the hook ?? Feeling a hit or pickup of the bait ?? Setting the hook ?? I got a bit lost at that point, and was not sure what to look out for when I try circle hooks.
For the most part ( at least till I finish redoing the transom on my boat ), my fishing is going to be from the bank. Is using bream a good bait under a B.W.A.B. for bigger cats ?? Or is there a different bait that would be better to try from the shore ?? I know a channel cat will go after just about anything it thinks is food. I'm asking about some of the better baits to try to get some of the bigger cats, from the shore. Do the bigger cats, 10 to 30 pounds or so, go deep in the winter, or can they still be caught from the shore ??
I'm sure I'm gonna have more questions for y'all, but hopefully I'll figure out where to post em fairly soon.
