Winter weather is almost upon us here in the northern areas. Taking the extra time to store our outboard motors will increase satisfactory service next year. Idleness is the greatest cause of outboard problems.
If possible the motor should be ran monthly just for a short time.We all know that that will not happen. Here are a few simple things that will help in a great part to keep the motor in good condition..
Start the motor and allow it to reach proper temperature. NOTE: WATER MUST CIRCULATE THROUGH THE UNIT TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE TO THE LOWER END WHICH INCLUDES THE WATER PUMP. JUST FIVE SECONDS OF THE MOTOR RUNNING WITHOUT WATER WILL DAMAGE THE WATER PUMP.....
Disconnect the fuel line and permit the motor to run at LOW idle while spraying a product such as Sea Foam into the carb throat until the motor stops from lack of fuel. ( WD_40 can be used instead of the Sea Foam. I use the Sea Foam because I think it is better.)
Next use a good fuel stabilizer and mix well in the tank. Store the tank in a cool dry area. It is better to just drain the tank and pour a qt. of benzol inside of the tank . Put the cap back on and shake the tank well. Drain again and store tank in a dry cool place with the vent open.
Drain the lower unit and replace the gear oil with the proper type gear oil for your unit.
Remove the cowling and lube the throttle and shifting linkage. Lube the swivel pin and tilt tube with a good multipurpose grease.
Replace the cowling and using a rust preventative spray lightly spray all exposed metal parts leaving a THIN coating.
Following these few simple rules will insure the chances that the motor will operate properly the next time you use the motor.
